Protest Outside of Department of Justice Scheduled for April 13th, 2007

On Friday, April 13th the Muslim American Society (MAS) Freedom Foundation and Friends of Human Rights are co-sponsoring a rally in front of the U.S. Department of Justice at NOON. The rally is in response to the U.S. Department of Justice’s failure to uphold their current plea agreement with Dr. Sami Al-Arian, which scheduled his release date for April 13th.

U.S. Department of Justice (In front), 12 Noon

Once billed as a major strike in the war on terrorism, the case against Dr. Sami Al-Arian seemed to crumble when jurors rejected federal charges that Dr. Al-Arian and three co-defendants operated a North American cell for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The government moved swiftly to combat the decision of the jury by compromising the plea agreement originally promised.

Dr. Al-Arian was recently sentenced to an additional eighteen months in jail for his refusal to testify before a grand jury. However, this verdict was rendered against him despite the negotiated absence of a cooperation clause in the plea agreement he had with the government. March 30th marked 1500 days in jail for Dr. Al-Arian. His case continues to galvanized supporters who recognize that he is a victim of an overzealous U.S. Justice Department and of anti-Muslim prejudice stemming from the Sept. 11 attacks.
