In your letter you state:

“In the name of free speech, we need not tolerate racism, sexism, misogyny, xenophobia, homophobia, classism, ableism, colonialism, or any other ideology that enforces itself through violence, fear, or “power over” others, and attempts to strip members of certain groups of dignity and respect.”

I’m writing to ask you to apply the same standard to the treatment of Dr. Rafil A. Dhafir. I hope you will speak out as a group on the total violation of civil rights that Dr. Dhafir encountered within the justice system. He was held for 31 months without bail (even though the Muslim community put up $2.3 million in bail), he was tried without access to his own records, and then sentenced to 22 years in jail for something the government presented as a white collar crime.

Below is an article that I have just written on Dr. Dhafir’s sentencing.

Sincerely,
Katherine Hughes
