Today is the 12th anniversary of the arrest and incarceration of Dr. Rafil Dhafir and the interrogation of 150 local Muslim families.  Members of the Dr. Dhafir Support Committee will be giving out post cards with information about Dr. Dhafir’s case on Marshall Street (university area), Syracuse, New York, February 26th, 2015, between noon and 2 p.m.

As a direct response to the humanitarian catastrophe created by the Gulf War and U.S. and U.K. sponsored UN sanctions on Iraq, Dr. Dhafir founded the charity Help The Needy (HTN). For 13 years he worked tirelessly to help publicize the plight of the Iraqi people and to raise funds to help them. According to the U.S. government, Dr. Dhafir donated $1.4 million of his own money over the years. As an oncologist, he was also concerned about the effects of depleted uranium on the Iraqi population which was experiencing skyrocketing cancer rates.

Dr. Dhafir has already served 12 years of his 22-year sentence. His lawyer, retired Lieutenant Commander of the General’s Corp, Charles Swift, submitted a Memorandum for a 2255 Habeaus Corpus Petition on February 2nd, 2015 and the government response is due on March 2nd. This is Dr. Dhafir’s last hope for any legal recourse.
